Pizzeria El Jefe Has a New Home in Chula Vista with amazing Mexican style pizza’s

If you’ve been eating pizza the same old way your whole life, Pizzeria El Jefe: Mexican Pizza Revolution is about to ruin you for anything ordinary. Tucked along Broadway across from the Chula Vista Center and next door to Tacos El Gordo, this family-run gem has been quietly turning heads in the South Bay with a concept that sounds simple but delivers something truly special: classic pizza craft meets the bold, soulful flavors of Mexican street food.

I’ll be honest. This wasn’t my first visit to El Jefe. I had the pleasure of stopping by their old spot on Broadway, closer to Main Street, a while back, and it’s still my favorite spot for Mexican-inspired pizzas. It was a small, no-frills location, but what came out of that kitchen was anything but small. The flavors hit like a taqueria and a New York slice shop had the best collaboration anyone could imagine.

I have been meaning to visit their new location for a long time, and last week I finally got the chance.

Pizzeria El Jefe: A New Home With Room to Grow

Walking into the new location, the first thing you notice is the space. Where the old spot was cozy to the point of snug, this new place genuinely invites you to settle in. There’s room for the whole family, a table with friends, or just stretching out and enjoying your meal without feeling like you’re eating in a phone booth. It’s still warm and neighborhood-y, not corporate or polished, but it gives El Jefe’s loyal following the room they’ve deserved all along.

I had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Jose and Anna, who were exactly what regulars always say: warm, genuinely happy to see you, and eager to talk about their food. There’s nothing performative about their hospitality. You can tell this place is their life’s work and they’re proud of it. They walked me through a few of their favorites on the menu and even invited me back into the kitchen to meet Diego, who was working the pizzas with the kind of calm focus that tells you everything you need to know about why those crusts come out so right. Watching him layer toppings with real intention, not just piling things on, was a little reminder that this is a kitchen that actually cares.

Pizzeria El Jefe in Chula Vista California
There is plenty of room inside Pizzeria El Jefe now. Their other location was a bit tight, but now you can bring your family and friends along.

The Pizza: Where Things Get Serious

El Jefe calls itself part of a “Mexican pizza revolution,” and after tasting their pies, that’s not hype. It’s just accurate. These aren’t your standard combination pizzas with a tortilla twist. The menu reads like someone mapped out the best dishes from their favorite taqueria and said, “What if all of this was on a perfectly made pizza?” The crust is crispy without being crackery, sturdy enough to hold generous toppings without going soggy, and it has just enough chew to remind you it’s real dough, not a cracker.

Pizzeria El Jefe La Verdulera is so good
Pizzeria El Jefe La Verdulera was so good. This was my first time trying it. The other half was the Me Gustan Tus Pinas with adobada and diced pineapple.

A few standout pies you absolutely need to try:

La Vaca Flaca: The birria pizza. Rich braised beef, diced onion, radish, and cilantro, served with a side of consomé for dipping. This is the one people can’t stop talking about, and once you try it you’ll understand why.

Me Gustan Tus Piñas: Adobada with pineapple, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, and house Frida poblana sauce. Sweet, smoky, and just spicy enough. A perfect balance from start to finish.

Mar y Tierra: Surf-and-turf done right. Sautéed shrimp, carne asada, avocado, tomato, jalapeño, and mayo-chipotle sauce. A flavor explosion on every single slice.

La Paisa: Carne asada, avocado, tomato, red onion, and cilantro on a Frida poblana base. This is taco-shop comfort food in pizza form, plain and simple.

Beyond the pizzas, don’t sleep on the wings and sides. The salsa verde wings and chipotle mango wings are standouts, and the “El Jefe balls” are fluffy garlic-butter dough bites that are exactly the kind of thing you order as a starter and end up fighting your table for. Fair warning.

And if you or someone at your table eats plant-based, El Jefe has genuinely thought about you. They offer dedicated vegan pizzas with vegan cheese and plant-based mock meats. The staff is also flexible with customizations, so don’t be shy about asking.

Pizzeria El Jefe La Vaca Flaca Pizza
Pizzeria El Jefe La Vaca Flaca Pizza is always my favorite with the traditional Mexican birria on top. They also serve it with a consommé on the side. So good.

Why This Spot Matters to Our Community

It would be easy to overlook Pizzeria El Jefe from the outside. Strip-mall setting, no flashy signage, no gimmicks. But that’s part of what makes it a real community spot. Jose and Anna built something here that belongs to this neighborhood, a family business rooted in Mexican culinary tradition, run by people who show up every day and put their names on every pie that goes out the door.

The new Broadway location is a step up in space, but none of that soul has been traded away in the process. If you visited the old spot back in the day and loved it, come see what they’ve grown into. And if you’ve never tried El Jefe, honestly, what are you waiting for? This is the good stuff, right here in our own backyard.

Get Out There and Support Local

Small, family-owned businesses like Pizzeria El Jefe are what make Chula Vista worth living in. Every order you place, every table you fill, every friend you bring through that door makes a real difference for Jose, Anna, Diego, and everyone who pours themselves into this place. So go visit them, bring your crew, and eat something incredible.

Sesame Place Chula Vista Is Open Again and Ready for Spring and Summer Fun

Sesame Place San Diego in Chula Vista is officially open again, and it feels great to see the neighborhood’s beloved theme park welcoming families back through its gates. After switching to a seasonal schedule last fall, the park reopened its doors and is now running daily through April 5 before moving to a weekends-only schedule leading up to Memorial Day weekend.

I have a long personal history with this property. Long before it became Sesame Place Chula Vista, this spot was White Water Canyon, and I have so many fond memories of coming here with my family as a kid. It was one of those summer staples you looked forward to all year. The park later became Knott’s Soak City before eventually transforming into the Sesame Street-themed destination it is today. I have not actually visited since it became Sesame Place San Diego, but that is about to change. We have plans to take the family this year, and I am genuinely looking forward to seeing what the place has become.

A West Coast Original Right Here in Chula Vista

Sesame Place San Diego holds a unique spot in the Southern California theme park landscape. It is the only theme park on the entire West Coast built around the world of Sesame Street. That alone makes it a special destination for families in Chula Vista and throughout San Diego County. The park blends classic character experiences with rides, live shows, dining, and water attractions all wrapped in the warmth of a brand kids have grown up loving.

The Park Is Celebrating Its 4th Birthday

The timing of this reopening comes with something extra to celebrate. Sesame Place San Diego kicked off its 4th birthday celebration right alongside the spring reopening. In March, guests can enjoy photo meet-and-greets with Sesame Street characters in birthday attire, a free birthday treat, and a free themed headband, while supplies last. Guests with birthdays in March can also receive special shoutouts throughout the park. I would have never guessed they have been in the community for four years, kudos to them.

Rides, Shows, and Character Experiences

The park offers 18 themed rides and water attractions, along with a family-friendly roller coaster perfect for younger thrill-seekers. Right now, guests can enjoy all the dry rides and attractions while the water features prepare for their warmer-weather opening in May 2026.

Beyond the rides, Sesame Place Chula Vista is well known for its live entertainment lineup. The Sesame Street Party Parade marches through the park daily and is a crowd favorite for families with little ones. The outdoor theater hosts live character shows including “Welcome to Our Street,” where Elmo, Abby, Grover, Rosita, and Cookie Monster put on a show for new visitors. Storytime with Big Bird offers a quieter, interactive experience that younger children especially enjoy. Character meet-and-greets are available throughout the park so kids can snap photos with their favorites in person.

Water Attractions at Sesame Place Chula Vista

The water side of Sesame Place San Diego is impressive. The park features a 500,000-gallon wave pool called Big Bird’s Beach, which ranks among the largest wave pools in all of Southern California. Joining it in May will be a full lineup of water attractions, including The Count’s Splash Castle (a brand-new all-water play structure), Big Bird’s Rambling River lazy river, Elmo’s Silly Sand Slides, Honker Dinger Dash, Cookie’s Monster Mixer family raft ride, Snuffy’s Spaghetti Slides, and more.

If your family is planning a summer visit to Sesame Place Chula Vista, the water attractions alone make it worth the trip once the warmer months arrive.

Dining the Whole Family Will Enjoy

There are plenty of places to eat inside the park, with something for every appetite and age. Dine with Elmo and Friends at the Sunny Day Cafe is a standout experience, offering a buffet in a spacious, air-conditioned indoor restaurant seating up to 160 guests. Characters visit tables, there is singing and dancing, and you can book a spot for a birthday celebration or just a fun family lunch. Reservations are required, so plan ahead.

Other dining spots around the park include Grover’s Grill for burgers and chicken sandwiches, Telly’s Trattoria for pizza, Oscar’s Grouchy Grub for wraps and salads, Monster Snacks for quick bites and kid-friendly fare, and Eats on the Street for popcorn, hot dogs, and snacks on the go.

The All-Day Dining Deal is worth looking into if your group likes to graze. It allows guests to eat and drink throughout the day at participating locations for one flat price, with a 90-minute window between visits.

Ticket Options and Current Deals

Sesame Place San Diego is currently running a Spring Break sale with some solid savings worth knowing about.

Single-Day Tickets are available starting at $47.99, down from the regular price of $97.99. Any-Day Tickets start at $79.99 with savings of up to 15 percent. The Two-Day, Two-Park Ticket is a great deal for San Diego families, combining one day at Sesame Place San Diego and one day at SeaWorld San Diego for $99.99 total, which works out to about $50 per day.

Season passes are also available through the park’s website if your family plans to visit more than once this season.

A Neighborhood Gem Worth Visiting

For those of us in Chula Vista, having Sesame Place San Diego right here in our community is something to appreciate. It draws visitors from across the region, supports local jobs, and gives families a world-class destination without the long drive. Whether you are planning a birthday trip, a spring break outing, or a summer day at the water park, Sesame Place Chula Vista has a lot going for it this season.

The park is open now through the spring and into summer. Check the official Sesame Place San Diego website for current hours, ticketing, and reservation information before your visit.

Chula Vista Police and Dick’s Sporting Goods Team Up to Reward Local Student-Athletes

Sometimes a Monday morning can surprise you in the best way possible. For ten student-athletes from the Southbay area, March 23 was one of those mornings — a day that started with a Chula Vista Police ride-along and ended with new gear, new friendships, and a whole lot of community spirit. This is exactly the kind of story that reminds us why Chula Vista is such a special place to call home.

The event brought together ten student-athletes, each selected by their schools and Chula Vista Police School Resource Officers, for a shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods on East H Street. Dick’s provided every student with a $100 gift card and an exclusive 20% discount, a generous investment in the young athletes who represent the future of our city.

The morning kicked off at 7:15 a.m. at the Chula Vista Police Department, where students met the officers they would be partnered with for the day. From there, they loaded up into marked police vehicles and made their way to the store, arriving at 8:00 a.m. to a warm welcome from store staff, complete with breakfast and personalized goodie bags at the door.

Chula Vista Police and Dick's Sporting
Officers and students browse the aisles together at Dick’s Sporting Goods, turning a Monday morning into a memory that will last well beyond the shopping spree.

Before anyone grabbed a shopping cart, students and officers faced off in cornhole, pickleball, and other games, a lighthearted way to break the ice and build some genuine connection before the main event. By 9:00 a.m., the group was off and shopping, with officers helping their student partners pick out sports gear, clothing, and equipment. The whole event wrapped up around 10:00 a.m., with everyone leaving in noticeably good spirits.

Acting Chula Vista Police Chief Dan Peak summed it up well: “Watching our officers team up with these students for a morning of games and shopping was a highlight for all of us. It’s moments like these that make our work rewarding and show that policing isn’t just about enforcement, it’s about building relationships.”

That sentiment is at the heart of what made this event worth celebrating. Dick’s Sporting Goods has been an active supporter of initiatives like this one across the country, and their commitment to pairing resources with relationship-building is something Chula Vista can appreciate and build on.

The Chula Vista Police Department hopes this event inspires more local businesses and organizations to get involved in creating opportunities for young people in our city. If this morning is any indication, the impact of that kind of investment goes far beyond a gift card. It builds trust, opens doors, and gives our kids a real chance to connect with the people behind the badge.

Taste of Chula Vista 2026: The Foodie Event You Cannot Miss on Third Avenue

Okay, Chula Vista, let me just say this up front: if you missed the Taste of Chula Vista on Thursday, you missed a fun night. I was out there all night long, passport in hand, working my way through more than 20 of the best local restaurants our beloved Chula Vista has to offer. My feet are tired, my belly is full, and honestly? I have zero regrets.

This is one of those events I look forward to every single year, and I mean that. I’ve been going since the very first Taste of Chula Vista, and every year it just gets better. There’s something about walking down Third Avenue with good food, good drinks, and good people all around you that just hits different. It feels like a giant block party where the whole neighborhood shows up and reminds you why living in the South Bay is the best.

What Is Taste of Chula Vista?

If you’re new here, let me catch you up. Taste of Third Avenue is one of the community’s most anticipated food events, bringing together dozens of local restaurants, bars, and eateries right in the heart of downtown Chula Vista. When you grab your ticket, you get a passport, yes, an actual little passport, that you carry with you as you sip, sample, and stroll from stop to stop. You punch it off as you go, which is honestly half the fun.

This year there were 25 stops on the passport, and the organizers sold nearly all 650 tickets. It was basically a sellout. The streets were packed from start to finish, which tells you everything you need to know about how much this community loves this event.

Why It Matters More Than Just the Food

Here’s something I love sharing every year: this event isn’t just a great excuse to eat your weight in tacos (though that, too). The money raised, somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000, goes right back into the community to help maintain Memorial Park and Third Avenue itself. So every bite you take is literally investing in the neighborhood. How great is that?

The restaurants feel it too. I talked to several business owners throughout the day, and the sentiment was the same across the board. Events like this bring in new faces, introduce people to what they offer, and create real connections between the community and local businesses. One owner I chatted with, who opened his spot back in 2023, said it best: it’s always great to have events where new people come in and see what you have to offer.

That’s what Taste of Chula Vista is all about.

Taste of Chula Vista in California
La Nacional always has an amazing sample. Along with their Paloma, they also had a chicken taco and chilaquiles. It was a popular spot along the route, so many people were having a great time.

My Favorite Bites of the Day

Alright, let’s get to the good stuff, the food.

I have to start with Brewjeria because, honestly, it’s never let me down, and this year was no exception. The mole tots are my absolute favorite sample of the entire event, every single year. I don’t know how they do it, but they do it right. If you’ve never had them, that alone is reason enough to get your tickets next year.

I was also really excited to see some fresh faces on the passport this time around. Smoke & Glory and Suzette were both part of the Taste of Chula Vista lineup this year, and I loved that new spots are joining and helping grow this tradition. It’s a great sign of how Third Avenue keeps evolving, and it makes the whole experience feel fresh even for a longtime regular like me.

And speaking of Suzette, keep your eyes open because they will be opening for dinner soon. That is definitely one to watch, so stay tuned for updates!

If I had to pick a favorite then my pick were the Mole Tots at Brewjeria Taproom & Kitchen. They were delicious, plus you also go to choose a sample beer of your choice during the event.

What the Community Wants to See Next Year

One of my favorite things about being out at Taste of Chula Vista all day is getting to talk to people, and this year the conversations were really good. Between bites and sips, I heard the same wish come up again and again: more live music and more vendor booths.

A lot of longtime attendees remember when Memorial Park was filled with vendors as part of the event, and honestly, so do I. That element added so much energy and gave the whole thing a true festival feel. People would love to see that come back, and I have to agree. Imagine working your way through your passport, grabbing a bite, and then wandering through a lively park full of local makers, artists, and vendors. That is the vision, and it feels very doable for a community as talented and creative as Chula Vista.

Hopefully, the organizers are listening because the people have spoken. More music, more vendors, more of that Memorial Park magic. Next year could be really something special.

Missed It This Year? Here’s What to Do

Don’t panic. The organizers confirmed they are coming back next year, bigger and better than ever. Taste of Chula Vista typically falls between mid- and late March, so start planning now. Tickets go fast, like almost-completely-sold-out fast, so your best move is to follow Chula Vista Living for updates on when tickets go on sale.

Trust me, you want to be on that list. This is one you do not want to miss two years in a row.

Taste of Third Avenue Chula Vista

Taste of Third Avenue Chula Vista is back, and it is shaping up to be the best one yet! On March 19th from 4 pm to 8 pm, Downtown Chula Vista transforms into the ultimate food lovers’ paradise as more than 20 restaurants open their doors for a self-guided tasting tour along Third Avenue from G Street to E Street.

This year is extra special because two brand new spots are joining the lineup. Smoke and Glory, Downtown Chula Vista’s newest BBQ spot, is making its Taste of Third Avenue debut fresh off its ribbon-cutting ceremony. Suzette, a brand new French-inspired bistro on Third Avenue, is also joining the fun with some amazing brunch-forward bites you are going to want to try.

Start your night at Memorial Park to pick up your food passport and check out the sponsor vendor booths, where you can score some great freebies. Then make your way down Third Avenue with live music setting the vibe all evening long.

Tickets are $54 per person and include all food and drink samples. Early-bird tickets are already sold out, and there are NO day-of sales, so grab yours now on the Downtown Chula Vista website before they are gone!

Harbor Park in Chula Vista: What to Expect When Construction Begins in 2026

Harbor Park in Chula Vista is the newest waterfront destination and is set to break ground in March 2026. As someone who has called this city home for over 20 years, I can honestly say it’s one of the most exciting things to happen to our bayfront in a long time.

I grew up coming down to the Chula Vista Bayfront as a kid. For me, this stretch of waterfront isn’t just a nice view; it’s tied to some of my favorite memories growing up here. I remember when this area felt alive with community events, when families would pack the waterfront and stay all day. Harbor Days was always the highlight. Back in 2005, it was a massive deal: vendor booths lined the waterfront, live entertainment filled the air, and the whole city seemed to show up. That energy was something special, and honestly, it’s something I’ve missed.

Watching that same waterfront lot between H Street and Sandpiper Way sit empty for years has been a little heartbreaking. But that’s all about to change. The $10.2-million south phase of Harbor Park is coming, and this community absolutely deserves it.

Harbor Park Construction Timeline: Breaking Ground March 2026

The Board of Port Commissioners unanimously approved construction plans and awarded a $10.5-million contract to BNBuilders to bring Harbor Park to life. Work kicks off in March 2026, starting with the playground. Splash pad construction will follow once final approval comes through in April 2026.

The completed Harbor Park will sit right alongside Sweetwater Park, which opened just north of this site in April 2025. I’ve already been to Sweetwater Park a handful of times since it opened, and I love it. It’s beautiful, well-designed, and always full of families. Together, these two parks are going to make this stretch of the bayfront my new go-to spot for morning walks and family outings. I genuinely can’t wait.

Harbor Park in Chula Vista Ground Breaking
On Tuesday, March 2nd, the Port of San Diego hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for Harbor Park in Chula Vista.

What’s Coming: Nautical Playground, Splash Pad, and Family-Friendly Spaces

The centerpiece of Harbor Park will be an impressive 25,000-square-foot playground with a nautical theme, designed to capture children’s imaginations while honoring the area’s rich maritime heritage. The playground will feature a climbable crow’s nest and fully accessible equipment for children of all abilities.

Just steps away, a 1,100-square-foot splash pad with user-activated water jets will offer the perfect way to cool off during San Diego’s sunny summers.

Rounding out the development: picnic areas, benches, shade structures, new trees, and improved walking and biking paths. As a parent, I’m already looking forward to bringing my kids here. The crow’s nest alone is going to be a hit. There’s something really fitting about a nautical-themed park on the Chula Vista waterfront; it ties the space to the history and character of this place in a way that feels intentional and genuine.

This Park Is Long Overdue, and the Timing Couldn’t Be Better

Let’s be honest: this park is way overdue. The Chula Vista Bayfront has incredible bones, but the infrastructure hasn’t kept up with the potential of this area or with the growth happening all around it.

With the Gaylord Pacific Resort now bringing major attention and investment to our waterfront, along with other development projects taking shape nearby, it’s time we have a park that truly reflects what Chula Vista is becoming. A world-class resort deserves a world-class neighborhood, and Harbor Park is going to be a big part of making that happen. This is our moment to show visitors and remind ourselves just how great this city really is.

Harbor Park in Chula Vista is a key piece of the Bayfront Master Plan, an ambitious effort to revitalize the city’s entire 556-acre waterfront. The project will expand the existing Bayside Park from 12 to 25 acres, creating a large, connected green space directly across from the Gaylord Pacific Resort. New pedestrian and cyclist pathways will link it all together, making the bayfront more accessible than it’s ever been.

Where the $10.2 Million Comes From

Funding for Harbor Park’s south phase comes from three sources. The Port Commissioners secured $2 million from the lease proceeds of Marine Group Boat Works, which helped close the budget gap following their unanimous vote to increase project funding. The project also received a $2.2-million grant specifically earmarked for the development. The remaining $6 million comes from funds previously allocated for Chula Vista shoreline improvements.

Future phases, including the planned beach area and boat launch, still need funding, but the momentum behind this project is real and growing.

What’s Still to Come and What I’m Hoping For

The south phase is just the beginning. Future phases of Harbor Park will add a beach area, a boat launch, and additional landscaping and amenities as part of the broader Bayfront Master Plan. Funding for those phases hasn’t been secured yet, but with the unanimous backing of the Port Commissioners and the steady progress we’ve already seen, I’m optimistic.

And here’s what I’m really hoping for: events coming back to this waterfront. Harbor Days, community festivals, live music by the water: this area used to have that energy, and there’s no reason it can’t have it again. With Harbor Park and Sweetwater Park side by side, there’s finally the space and the infrastructure to make it happen. I’d love to see the city and the Port lean into that. Imagine bringing your kids to a Harbor Days-style event at Harbor Park on a Saturday morning, then walking over to Sweetwater Park for a picnic in the afternoon. That’s the Chula Vista bayfront experience I want for my family, and I think a lot of our neighbors feel the same way.

Harbor Park in Chula Vista North Project
Harbor Park is bringing a nautical-themed playground with climbing structures and a splash pad with outdoor rinse showers to the Chula Vista waterfront. Groundbreaking is set for March 2026.

Harbor Park Is Almost Here, and It’s a Big Deal

I’ve lived in Chula Vista for over 20 years. I’ve watched this city grow and change, sometimes slowly and sometimes all at once. Harbor Park feels like one of those all-at-once moments, a sign that the bayfront we’ve always known had potential is finally being realized.

The $10.2-million investment will deliver an inclusive, beautifully designed waterfront space that reflects the best of what this community has to offer. Combined with Sweetwater Park just to the north, this stretch of the Chula Vista bayfront is going to become the kind of place families build their weekends around.

I’ll be watching every step of construction and sharing updates right here. If you’re as excited about Harbor Park as I am, drop a comment below and let me know: what feature are you most looking forward to? And would you love to see events come back to the waterfront? I have a feeling I’m not the only one.
