Primstor Development Launches Community Survey for Chula Vista Center Revamp

The Chula Vista Center is turning a new page, and this time, the community gets to help write it.

Earlier this year, Primstor Development purchased the Chula Vista Center with a vision to bring life back to one of the city’s most recognized landmarks. Known for its commitment to revitalizing overlooked communities, Primstor has built more than 100 projects across California over the past 30 years. Their goal for Chula Vista is clear: preserve the mall’s family-friendly charm while reimagining it as a gathering space that reflects what residents truly want.

A New Chapter for a Beloved Landmark

Since the ownership change in March, Primstor has shared plans to attract new businesses, host community events, feature local art, and enhance public areas with updated seating and landscaping. But before they make any big moves, they want to hear directly from the people who matter most — Chula Vista residents.

This week, the company launched a community survey campaign asking locals to share their ideas for the center’s future. From favorite stores and restaurants to public spaces and events, no idea is too small. The survey is open until October 31, and participants can fill it out online through a link available on their website.

Community Voices Leading the Way

The idea of community involvement started months ago when Kurt Bunch, founder of Chula Vista Living, posted a video in March asking residents what they’d love to see at the mall. The video quickly went viral, gathering more than a thousand comments; from requests for a Trader Joe’s to calls for more dining options, live music, and family spaces.

“That video showed how much people care about this mall,” Bunch said. “It’s part of our city’s history, and the response proved that residents want to be part of its comeback.”

Primstor agreed. Seeing the community’s enthusiasm, they partnered with Chula Vista Living to promote the survey and continue gathering ideas.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Residents have already suggested adding open-air markets with local vendors, more outdoor seating, and an area for community performances. The excitement is growing as residents realize their input could help shape a more vibrant, welcoming space for everyone.

“We want to make sure the community feels heard,” a Primstor spokesperson shared. “This mall has been part of Chula Vista’s identity for generations – and we want its next chapter to reflect that legacy.”

As part of the partnership, Chula Vista Living will continue posting videos and updates to spotlight the center’s progress and inspire more locals to get involved.

If you haven’t shared your thoughts yet, now’s your chance. Visit ChulaVistaCenter.com before October 31 to complete the survey and help reimagine the Chula Vista Center – a place built by the community, for the community.

Life Time Gym Otay Ranch is set to open in Chula Vista this December

Chula Vista residents will soon have access to a new world-class fitness destination. Life Time Gym Otay Ranch is opening an 84,766-square-foot facility in the Cota Vera area at Otay Ranch, bringing resort-style amenities to the community. With seven pickleball courts, three pools, a full-service spa, and much more, this facility represents a significant investment in local recreation and wellness.

Enrollment is already underway, and Life Time representatives have been attending local community events to answer questions and connect with future members.

Life Time Otay Ranch: More Than Just a Gym

Life Time Otay Ranch is redefining what fitness looks like in San Diego County. Spanning an entire city block, this facility is designed as a country club-style destination rather than a traditional gym, offering amenities you won’t find at most fitness centers.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the comprehensive workout facilities, while pickleball players can enjoy seven dedicated courts. Families can make use of three pools, including one featuring a waterslide that’s sure to be a hit with children.

Beyond fitness, the facility includes a full-service spa offering hair, body, and nail treatments for those seeking relaxation and self-care. The multi-room kids academy provides a safe, engaging space for children while parents work out or unwind.

What truly sets Life Time apart is its focus on lifestyle and community. The facility features co-working spaces for members who want to balance productivity with wellness, plus a full-service cafe, restaurant, and bar serving coffee, smoothies, fresh meals, and more. These amenities create a social hub where members can spend hours beyond their workout, making it more comparable to a country club than a typical gym.

Membership Costs and Community Concerns

Life Time Gym Otay Ranch memberships are priced at $250 per month for an individual or $450 per month for two people. These rates have sparked discussion among Chula Vista residents, with many expressing concern that the cost may be too high for the area.

However, it’s essential to understand what these memberships include. Unlike budget gyms that charge $10-30 per month for basic equipment access, Life Time offers a comprehensive lifestyle experience. Your membership covers access to pools, pickleball courts, spa facilities, kids programs, co-working spaces, and dining options—amenities that would cost hundreds of dollars separately if purchased à la carte.

When compared to traditional country club memberships, which can range from $300 to over $1,000 per month in San Diego County, Life Time’s pricing positions it as a more accessible alternative for families seeking a premium fitness and social experience.

Representatives from Life Time have been present at local community events, providing information and answering questions about membership options and what the facility will offer.

Economic Benefits for Chula Vista

The arrival of Life Time Gym Otay Ranch brings substantial economic benefits to the community. The facility will generate approximately $500,000 annually in property tax revenue, directly supporting city services and infrastructure improvements.

The total economic impact is estimated at $88 million, accounting for construction investment and ongoing operations. The facility will create numerous local jobs across multiple sectors, including fitness training, spa services, food and beverage, maintenance, childcare, and administrative positions.

Life Time’s decision to invest in Chula Vista reflects confidence in the community’s growth potential and quality of life, bringing both recreational opportunities and economic development to the area.

Getting Started

Enrollment for Life Time Otay Ranch is now open. Interested residents can visit the official Life Time website to sign up for membership and learn more about available amenities and programs. Representatives continue to attend local community events, offering the chance to ask questions and tour the facility before it opens.

This new addition to Chula Vista represents a significant upgrade to the city’s fitness and wellness landscape, offering residents a comprehensive lifestyle destination that combines exercise, relaxation, dining, and community in one location.

Sweetwater Woman’s Club Holiday Craft Show: 57 Years of Giving Back

For nearly six decades, the Sweetwater Woman’s Club in Bonita has turned holiday cheer into college dreams. What began as a small fundraiser with handmade decorations has grown into a three-day community event filled with local artisans, festive gifts, and a mission to help students in the Sweetwater Union High School District.

A Tradition Rooted in Creativity

The first Sweetwater Women’s Club craft fair featured homemade ornaments and holiday décor crafted by members who sewed, painted, and knitted each piece. Back then, local homes were decorated with these handmade treasures, and neighbors could buy tickets to tour them. The money raised went directly toward scholarships for graduating seniors—a tradition that continues today.

Over time, the event evolved. Now, close to two dozen local artists and small business owners set up booths to sell their creations. A portion of each sale supports the Club’s scholarship fund and other community programs.

Why a Craft Show?

Instead of fancy dinners or galas, the Club chose something more personal—a craft fair where shoppers can find one-of-a-kind gifts and decorations. According to board member Margaret Peña, the event has become the Club’s most anticipated fundraiser of the year.

Each year, new vendors join, bringing handmade jewelry, décor, art, and more. The fair also includes silent auctions, raffles, and baskets donated by local businesses—all helping raise money for scholarships.

Be sure to come out and support the local craft vendors on October 16th. The event is from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Sweetwater Woman’s Club in Bonita California.

Scholarships That Change Lives

For many students, these scholarships mean more than just financial help. They represent encouragement and community support.

Jessica Macias, a 2011 graduate of Castle Park High, shared, “As a first-generation Latina, this scholarship made me feel seen and helped pay for my first-year textbooks at SDSU.”

Ashley Danielle Lumanlan, from Sweetwater High’s Class of 2025, added, “The Sweetwater Woman’s Club Scholarship helped cover my tuition and lab costs as I pursue nursing at SDSU. It opened the door to my future.”

Supporting Local Artisans and the Community

The Sweetwater Woman’s Club Holiday Craft Show benefits everyone involved. Local makers connect with shoppers who love to support small businesses, while attendees enjoy browsing and buying unique handmade gifts. The event also gives vendors a chance to network and grow their customer base.

“It’s truly a community event,” Peña said. “Every purchase supports our scholarship program and allows students to succeed.”

The Heart Behind the Event

Club members handle every detail—from organizing vendors to preparing raffle prizes and even baking homemade treats for the event. Each year, they design a handmade quilt to raffle off and offer plants and specialty cheese products for sale.

“It’s a labor of love,” Peña shared. “We come together to make sure every student has a brighter future.”

Sweetwater Woman’s Club Looking Ahead

Membership in the Sweetwater Woman’s Club continues to grow, bringing in more women who want to give back. As college and trade school costs rise, the Club hopes to expand its scholarship fund with additional donors and support.

“There’s no better investment than in our kids’ education,” Peña said.

Bonita Craft Fair Event Details

The 57th Annual Holiday Craft Show runs Thursday, October 16, through Saturday, October 18, from 10 AM to 4 PM each day. Stop by to shop local, enjoy the holiday spirit, and support the next generation of students—all while celebrating the community that makes Bonita special.

Go Check Out This House For Halloween

If you enjoy visiting Chula Vista homes adorned for Halloween, I have a recommendation for you. Check out the house at 315 First Avenue, located between F and G Streets on the west side of Chula Vista. The owner does an incredible job decorating the house. However, if you’re not a fan of clowns, you might want to steer clear, as there are quite a few creepy clowns, including one that appears to follow you and utters unsettling phrases. It’s definitely worth a visit!

A big shout-out to all the homes that decorate for Halloween; I know it takes a lot of effort! Stay tuned, as I’ll have more house recommendations coming soon.

Total Wine Chula Vista is now open in Eastlake

The brand-new Total Wine Chula Vista location has officially opened its doors at 2230 Otay Lakes Road in the Eastlake Village Center, and let me tell you—this place is huge. I had the chance to walk through before opening day, and it’s more than just rows of wine bottles. You’ll find craft beers, top-shelf spirits, a walk-in humidor with cigars, and just about everything you could want for a celebration or a casual night in.

What really stood out to me was the staff. They’re not just there to ring you up – they’re ready to give pairing tips, recommend something new, or help you find that perfect bottle for a special occasion. Whether you’re shopping in person, ordering online, or pulling up for curbside pickup, they’ve made it convenient for everyone in the South Bay and Eastlake area.

And here’s the twist: it’s right across the street from BevMo. Could this mean better deals for us? Maybe even a little price competition? Time will tell, but in the meantime, if you’re stocking up for the holidays or just want to try something new, this spot is worth checking out.
