Common Theory in Chula Vista is a great spot

Checking out Common Theory in Chula Vista today. You’ll find them at 1980 Optima St in the Millenia Community. They just launched a Taco Tuesday promotion, and it was too good not to try. The tacos were excellent, but we couldn’t stop there. This spot boasts a vast beer selection and offers a wide range of other delicious food options to enjoy. If you haven’t made it out here yet, or even if you have, this is your sign to come back and treat yourself. A big thank you to Chris and the team for their hospitality. Be sure to follow Common Theory on social for all their latest updates.

New French Restaurant Coming To Chula Vista

Another exciting update for Downtown Chula Vista. A brand-new French restaurant is opening soon in the former Mmm Cakes spot. It will be called Suzette, and they’ll be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The plan is to open this month (fingers crossed). I’ll share their opening date and social media once everything is live, so you can stop by and support them. This is something fresh and different for Downtown, and I know a lot of you have been asking for just that.

Chula Vista Fire Department Open House is Back on Saturday October 11th

What is happening Chula Vista?! One of my favorite events is coming up fast, and I’m excited to see everyone there. The Chula Vista Fire Department Open House for Fire Prevention Week will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station #5 (341 Orange Avenue).

I was out there last year, and it was such a great time. Families filled the station, kids were running around wide-eyed at the fire trucks, and the firefighters made everyone feel welcome. It was inspiring to see how many people came out to support our local heroes – and I’m sure this year will be even bigger.

What to Expect This Year

The open house is completely free and perfect for families. There will be live demonstrations, fire equipment displays, and fire prevention exhibits that are both educational and fun. You’ll get to see the firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics in action, plus meet the Fire Explorers and Fire Prevention team.

It was cool to see so many demonstrations and watch the fire department in action. I even had a chance to use a fire extinguisher, which is something I luckily have never had a chance to do before.

Along with all this they will also have local vendors, community organizations, and entertainment for children. A brand-new addition this year is a kid’s scavenger hunt, which I know will be a hit for families.

Be sure you follow the Chula Vista Fire Department on Instagram. They always have fun activities for the families like the annual Chula Vista Fire Department Pancake Breakfast. I love getting out there for that one.

Be sure to visit the local vendor area when you go. They have a wide range of local businesses and community organizations.

Why You Should Go to the Chula Vista Fire Department Open House

If you’ve never been to the Fire Department’s Open House, this is your chance to see firsthand the incredible work our firefighters do every day. Bring the kids, watch some of the demonstrations, let them climb aboard the fire engines, and take part in the scavenger hunt. It’s a fun, safe, and educational event for the whole family.

I’ll be there again this year, and I hope to see our community come out in full force. Let’s show our support for the men and women who keep us safe.

Pink & Popcorn: Otay Ranch Town Center Event Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness

The Chula Vista community can look forward to an exciting evening of entertainment and empowerment when the popular Pink & Popcorn Event returns on Tuesday, October 7th. This special Otay Ranch Town Center event combines meaningful awareness with family-friendly fun, featuring a screening of the beloved musical “Wicked” under the stars.

Community Celebration Meets Important Cause

Following last year’s tremendous success, organizers knew this heartwarming tradition needed to continue. Tim Kilcourse, General Manager at Otay Ranch Town Center, explains how community feedback influenced their decision to revive this meaningful gathering. The 2024 debut created such positive connections between neighbors that planning for 2025 began immediately.

The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with live DJ entertainment, exciting giveaways, and interactive photo opportunities. Guests who arrive early can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere before the movie begins at 7 p.m. This year’s film choice perfectly matches the celebration’s theme, as “Wicked” showcases strong female characters who embrace their unique qualities and inspire others.

The event will coincide with the Otay Ranch Town Center Farmers Market. It’s the perfect time to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the movie.

Honoring Warriors and Survivors

The centerpiece Warrior Wall creates a touching tribute space where community members can honor loved ones affected by breast cancer. Throughout October, visitors leave personalized ribbons to celebrate survivors, support current fighters, and remember those who have passed. This interactive memorial grows daily as more families share their stories and show solidarity.

Local partnerships enhance the event’s educational mission. La Maestra Community Health Centers and the Helen Knoll Foundation provide valuable resources and information in an approachable setting. These collaborations ensure guests receive practical health guidance while enjoying the evening’s entertainment.

Entertainment and Education Combined

The organizers carefully balance fun activities with meaningful education. While photo booths and music create joyful moments, health information booths and the memorial wall provide meaningful awareness opportunities. This thoughtful approach helps guests learn about breast health without feeling overwhelmed by serious topics.

New additions for 2025 include comfortable outdoor movie seating and cozy beanbag chairs, ensuring everyone enjoys the screening in style. The Dining Pavilion transforms into an open-air theater where families and friends can gather comfortably.

Supporting Local Business Community

The timing coordinates perfectly with the weekly Farmers Market, encouraging guests to explore local vendors and grab dinner before the show. Several tenant businesses participate by creating themed window displays throughout October, demonstrating the shopping center’s commitment to breast cancer awareness beyond this single event.

Namaste Fitness joins other retailers in decorating storefronts with pink ribbons and educational materials. This center-wide participation creates an atmosphere of support that extends throughout the month.

Otay Ranch Town Center Event
The Otay Ranch Town Center will also have a movie night during the event. They will be showing Wicked. Be sure to grab a good seat.

Dress Up and Join the Fun

Attendees are encouraged to embrace the pink theme or channel their inner “Wicked” character with creative costumes. The DJ awards prizes for the best-dressed participants between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., adding an element of friendly competition to the evening.

Seating opens at 6:30 p.m., giving families time to find perfect spots for the outdoor screening. While alcohol is not permitted, the event offers plenty of excitement through music, games, and community connections.

Building Connections That Matter

The true magic happens when neighbors meet neighbors and new friendships form over shared experiences. This Otay Ranch Town Center event creates space for meaningful conversations about health, hope, and healing while maintaining a celebratory atmosphere.

Whether visitors want to snap photos, leave memorial ribbons, or enjoy quality entertainment, Pink & Popcorn offers something special for everyone. The combination of awareness, entertainment, and community spirit makes this October evening one that brings people together for all the right reasons.

Chula Vista Yard House finally opening this Sunday September 28th

What is happening Chula Vista?! Put down that leftover pizza and listen up because I’ve got news that’s going to make your Sunday way more exciting. The brand new Chula Vista Yard House at Otay Ranch Town Center is FINALLY opening this Sunday at 11 AM!

I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, “Didn’t they already say it was opening like three times?” Trust me, I feel you. We first told you about this place back in July when it was supposed to open on September 8th. Then it got pushed to September 14th. Now here we are with the ACTUAL opening date, and honestly, good things come to those who wait (even if we’re getting a little impatient).

My Sneak Peek Adventure

I got to peek inside this Tuesday, and wow. They wouldn’t let me take photos, but trust me when I say this place is HUGE. Way bigger than I thought it would be. If you have a large party, this is your new spot, as they have large tables for big groups.

I met Lane, one of the managers, who was running around putting finishing touches on everything. The poor guy looked like he hadn’t slept in days, but he was still super excited. “We’re really excited about opening, and finally getting people inside, having fun and enjoying themselves is what I love,” he told me while adjusting what looked like the millionth chair.

Lane also mentioned something that made me laugh. “People keep asking me every time I’m outside when we’re opening, and it feels good being able to tell them this Sunday.” I can totally picture this because I’ve probably asked him that question myself at least twice while walking through the mall.

What Makes Chula Vista Yard House Special?

Okay, let me paint you a picture. This isn’t just another restaurant. The Chula Vista Yard House is basically a beer lover’s dream come true. They have 90 draft beers on tap. NINETY! That’s more beer options than I have streaming services (and that’s saying something).

They offer a wide range of options, from American craft beers to imported ones, as well as local selections carefully curated by the management team. The coolest part? There’s this glass-enclosed keg room where they store up to 4,000 gallons of beer. It’s like a beer museum, but better because you can actually drink what’s inside.

All those beers get pumped through overhead tubes to the bar, and every single one comes out at exactly 36 degrees. That level of beer science impresses me more than it should.

The Food Menu

Now, I’m not just here for the beer (okay, maybe I am a little bit). The food menu has over 80 dishes, which is great because I’m one of those people who takes forever to decide what to order. My kids always roll their eyes at me when I ask the server “what’s good here?” for the third time.

They’ve got Poke Nachos, which sounds fancy and delicious. There’s Nashville Hot Chicken for when you want to feel the burn. They have tacos because, let’s be honest, tacos make everything better. And they serve USDA prime burgers, which means I’m definitely going to have to loosen my belt afterward.

The best part? They actually have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. So when my sister visits (she’s on one of those diets that eliminates everything fun), she can still come hang out with us.

You can view their full menu on their website here.

Perfect for Game Day (And Every Other Day)

This place is 9,160 square feet of pure entertainment. They have flat-screen TVs everywhere, along with all the sports packages, so you won’t miss any games. I’m already planning to camp out here during football season, much to my family’s dismay.

General Manager Jason Carr is running the show, and from what I’ve heard, he knows his stuff. Additionally, they offer happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 PM, featuring half-price appetizers and drink specials. That’s dangerous information for someone like me who already struggles with impulse food decisions.

The Grand Opening Game Plan

Yard House Chula Vista will be open every day from 10 AM to midnight, which means you can get your beer and burger fix whenever you want. They’re ready for lunch, dinner, and those late-night cravings we all get.

This is actually Yard House’s third location in San Diego, so they know what they’re doing. The company was founded in Long Beach in 1996 and now operates over 90 restaurants nationwide. Not bad for a place that started with just one location.

My Opening Day Prediction

I have a feeling Sunday is going to be absolutely crazy at Otay Ranch Town Center. I’m talking about a parking lot full, a line out the door, a social media explosion, crazy. My advice? Arrive early, be patient, and consider having a backup dinner plan in case of delays.

Personally, I’m torn between being there right when they open (because I’m nosy and love a good opening day) or waiting a week for the chaos to die down (because I also love being able to find a parking spot). What about you, Chula Vista? Are you brave enough to tackle opening day, or will you wait it out, like me?

Let me know in the comments if you’re planning to check out the new Chula Vista Yard House this Sunday. I’ll be the one taking blurry photos of my food and probably asking the server way too many questions about the beer selection.

Chula Vista Parklets Spark Debate Among Downtown Businesses and Residents

Business owners in downtown Chula Vista are calling for the return of Chula Vista parklets, the curbside patios that became common during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many say the parklets brought energy to 3rd Avenue, created more seating for customers, and gave the district a livelier atmosphere.

Mariana, owner of Balboa Bar & Grill, explained that families enjoyed the chance to eat outside in the area’s mild weather, and businesses benefited from the added visibility. “People love to be outside. We have the perfect weather for it, so families definitely enjoy it,” she said.

The Chula Vista parklets were removed in September of last year after the city ended its temporary allowance. At that time, city leaders had about 120 days to pass a new ordinance that would make the parklets permanent, but that step has not been taken. The Downtown Chula Vista Business Association says the delay puts local restaurants at a disadvantage compared to neighborhoods like Little Italy in San Diego, where outdoor dining has continued to thrive.

Circulate San Diego, a nonprofit focused on community and transportation, held a demonstration event on 3rd Avenue this week to show what the return of Chula Vista parklets could look like. Supporters argue the spaces do more than create a pleasant dining experience; they also expand restaurant capacity, increase foot traffic, and help small businesses recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

Be sure to watch our video we did last year on the Chula Vista Parklets being removed and what businesses were most affected by the loss of outdoor seating.

Not everyone, however, supports bringing them back. Some residents worry that Chula Vista parklets take away parking spots that are already in short supply during the day. Certain downtown businesses have also raised concerns about fairness, saying that if one restaurant is allowed a parklet, all businesses should have the same opportunity. A local brewery has been especially vocal about the issue, calling for a clear and reasonable structure that ensures equity among business owners.

Local business owners who favor the return say the community responded well to the Chula Vista parklets in the past and believe they could once again help boost downtown. For now, many are waiting on the City Council to act, hoping that new rules will allow the parklets to return and bring back some of the vibrancy they created.
