Chula Vista Lemon Festival for 2024 is going to be a can’t miss event

The Chula Vista Lemon Festival is back for its 27th year, bringing a wave of vibrant community spirit and a splash of citrus! Set in the heart of downtown Chula Vista, this beloved festival transforms the area from Parkway to E Street into a lively hub of entertainment, local flavors, and family fun. This year’s Lemon Festival is Saturday, August 17th, from 11 AM to 6 PM; it’s an event you will want to attend. Let’s dive into what makes the Lemon Festival a must-visit this year.

What to Expect at the Chula Vista Lemon Festival

Prepare for a day packed with excitement and activities suited for all ages. As you stroll through the streets of downtown Chula Vista, you’ll be greeted by a festive atmosphere perfect for making lasting memories with family and friends. The festival is thoughtfully planned to ensure every family member, from the littlest to the oldest, finds something enjoyable.

“Without a doubt, the Lemon Festival stands as one of the most cherished traditions among locals here in Downtown Chula Vista,” said Dominic Li Mandri, District Manager of the Downtown Chula Vista Association. “Year after year, tens of thousands of South Bay residents and San Diegans flock to Third Avenue to enjoy this beloved event. It’s truly amazing to witness the growing enthusiasm surrounding the Lemon Festival, and we can’t wait to see you all there!”

Activities and Entertainment

The Chula Vista Lemon Festival is famed for its array of attractions. Over 100 vendors will line the streets, offering everything from handmade crafts to local produce. For music lovers, two stages will feature live performances throughout the day, showcasing a variety of genres to keep the energy high.

Numerous inflatables and interactive games are set up in the park, and kids will have a blast. Take advantage of the Lemon cook-off and the Lemon squeeze stand, which promise zesty fun and a chance to taste local culinary talents.

When we get closer to the event, they will usually share the live music schedule, and we will be sure to post so you know.

Local Vendors and Culinary Delights

Highlighting the local economy, the festival hosts vendors like Lemon Drop pastry shop, renowned for its lemon-themed treats such as lemon cookies, cake truffles, and parfait cups. These local businesses bring unique flavors to the festival and offer a taste of Chula Vista’s community spirit. Supporting these vendors means boosting local entrepreneurship and enjoying delicious creations made with love.

Please be patient if you plan to visit any of the bars, breweries, and eateries along Third Avenue. Many will be busy with festival goers looking for a break from the event or even the hot sun. Last year, visiting the many food trucks was easier than securing a table at a downtown restaurant.

Live Music and Performances

Music is a cornerstone of the Lemon Festival, with this year’s special performance by SM Familia, known for their eclectic mix of Cumbia, Chicano music, and reggae. The diverse musical lineup ensures there’s something for every ear, whether you’re a fan of upbeat dance numbers or soothing melodies. The stages will be alive with the sounds of local talent, making them the perfect backdrop for a day of festival fun.

How to make the best of your Lemon Festival

Plan to make the most of your festival experience and arrive in downtown Chula Vista early to secure parking. Last year, parking filled up fast, and many people had to park blocks away from the event. Public transportation options are also available for those looking to avoid the hassle of parking. Pack essentials like sunscreen and water bottles to stay comfortable throughout the day. Many vendors take payment cards, but I suggest you bring some cash. The festival is designed to be an all-day affair, so come prepared to explore, enjoy, and relax!

Transforming Chula Vista: The Envision Broadway Mural Project

El Patio restaurant on Broadway in Chula Vista brightens the neighborhood with a stunning new mural. This vibrant addition is part of the Envision Broadway coalition’s efforts to enhance the corridor through art. The mural covers the building’s entire south-facing wall and features a beautiful floral theme that catches the eye of both motorists and pedestrians traveling north along Broadway.

The Impact of Murals on the Community

“It’ll beautify the street for people driving by,” said El Patio restaurant owner Lili Warchol. “It’ll increase business, hopefully keep taggers away, and bring pride to the community.” Murals like this make neighborhoods more attractive and help local businesses by drawing more foot traffic.

Envision Broadway is seeking additional businesses willing to donate wall space, sponsor murals, and support local artists. Murals add color to the neighborhood and serve as a treat for locals and tourists alike. They can also become part of public art tours, making the area more inviting and vibrant.

Envision Broadway’s Vision

The Envision Broadway initiative aims to revitalize the aging Broadway corridor. It aligns with the Live Well vision, which focuses on cultivating a multicultural business district that promotes healthy choices and the highest quality of life.

Community members are encouraged to voice their needs and plan improvements through the Envision Broadway Mural Project. This project enhances the physical space and fosters a sense of ownership and pride among residents.

Benefits Beyond Aesthetics

Mural painting events provide meaningful activities for youth, helping to keep them engaged and away from substance use. South Bay Youth for Change (SBY4C) students and volunteers play a crucial role in these projects, painting murals with themes that promote an alcohol- and drug-free lifestyle.

“I paint sometimes. I don’t have a lot of experience at it, but I have been doing a lot of community service lately,” said Yaretzi Lopez, a recent high school graduate. She learned about the mural painting event through Instagram and found it to be a therapeutic experience.

Envision Broadway and Public Health

The Envision Broadway initiative, a project of the Institute for Public Strategies, provides resources and services for individuals with substance use disorders. The project supports the community with screening, treatment, and recovery resources available year-round through the It’s Up to Us website and the Access & Crisis Line at (888) 724-7240.

The Envision Broadway Mural Project positively impacts Chula Vista, enhancing the area’s visual appeal and community spirit. If you’re a business owner or community member interested in getting involved, consider donating wall space, sponsoring a mural, or helping with the painting.

To participate in or sponsor a mural project, contact Envision Broadway. For support and resources related to substance use disorders, visit the It’s Up to Us website or call the Access & Crisis Line at (888) 724-7240. Let’s work together to create a thriving, beautiful community in Chula Vista.

Honoring Julius Kim Cunanan: The Heart of the JKC Memorial Hunte Parkway Road Race

The Padyak Racing Team, Inc. is a passionate force in our community, dedicated to promoting bicycling and supporting both novice and professional racers. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, they work tirelessly to encourage local participation and foster national and international competitions. This mission is wonderfully embodied in the JKC Memorial Hunte Parkway Road Race, a touching tribute to Julius Kim Cunanan, a local cycling hero.

Celebrating Julius Kim Cunanan’s Legacy

Julius Kim Cunanan was more than just a cyclist; he was a beacon of enthusiasm and camaraderie in our community. A resident of Chula Vista, Julius co-founded the Padyak Racing Team (PRT) and welcomed new members with open arms, helping them discover the joys of bicycling and racing. Tragically, Julius lost his life in a bike crash in January 2021, but his spirit lives on through the annual JKC Memorial Hunte Parkway Road Race.

The Birth of a Chula Vista Community Event

The first race was held in June 2022, attracting participants from California, Arizona, Nevada, several other states, and Mexico. This inaugural event was designated the SCNCA (Southern California Nevada Cycling Association) Masters and Super Masters Championships, setting a high bar for future races.

In 2023, the race date moved to May 20, with 256 racers lining up to compete, ranging from novices to pros. This event isn’t just about racing; it’s about community, remembrance, and inspiring future generations.

“With the huge cycling family here in Chula Vista, we really wanted to focus on bringing this event to the community,” said Marc Hernandez, one of the event promoters. We love how the community has come together for this event, and we look forward to seeing it grow right here for a long time.”

Remember to find more Chula Vista events like this on our event calendar.

Engaging the Next Generation

One of the standout features of the JKC Memorial Hunte Parkway Road Race is its commitment to youth engagement. Over 100 kids aged 3-12 participated in a community kids event, where every child received a medal and a Mattel toy. Seeing the joy on their faces as they crossed the finish line was heartwarming. Thanks to donations from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and residents, the kids also had a chance to win bicycles and more Mattel toys in a raffle.

Community Support and Involvement

An event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of over 60 volunteers and numerous local sponsors. Padyak Racing Team extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed, from local businesses to enthusiastic participants. The local community’s support has made this event a resounding success.

New Additions and Highlights

This year, the race introduced a vendor food court featuring delicious offerings from Famigos, Tacos El Unico, and The Rush Coffee. Peninsula Bikes, a local bike shop, also had a display and an E-vehicle from the title sponsor, Herman Cook VW Encinitas.

The women’s pro podium was a poignant moment, showcasing the surviving children of Julius—Moonchie, Ink, and their mother, Kai. Pro-Sol Insurance generously sponsored the women’s pro race payouts, and Agile Sports Wear, sponsored by Bonnici Law Group, provided jerseys for the winners.

The JKC Memorial Hunte Parkway Road Race is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of community, perseverance, and Julius Kim Cunanan’s enduring legacy. Let’s continue to pedal forward together, honoring the past and creating a brighter future for our community.

The Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour was another fun event for the community

The Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour has come and gone for the South Bay. We were treated to a soccer lovers’ dream event this past Saturday. Chula Vista was abuzz with soccer fever as the Chrome Ball Tour, presented by the San Diego FC professional soccer league, made its much-anticipated final stop in our vibrant downtown area. The event was on Saturday, and it was a lot of fun. I was out there all day checking out the games, merchandise, and more. If you missed it, here is a recap and my thoughts on the event.

I would love to hear from those who did go and see what they thought. If you were one of them, check me out on Facebook and comment on your thoughts about the event.

Soccer games taking over downtown Chula Vista

The Chrome Ball Tour transformed the bustling Third Avenue into mini soccer arenas, inviting players of all ages and skill levels to partake in 3-on-3 showdowns. Memorial Park served as a hub of activity with a beer garden sponsored by Sycuan Casino & Novo Brazil. At the same time, the main stage under the iconic Third Avenue sign kept the energy high with pulsating beats from the DJ.

Watching the mini-games played right there on the street was a lot of fun. The competition was fierce and fast-paced. If you were sitting on the sidelines, you needed to pay attention because the soccer balls were flying. They kicked off the event with a 3-on-3 first responders game. Chula Vista police and the fire department had a friendly game of soccer to get things started.

Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour had soccer games
One of the cool things at the Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour was the 3-on-3 mini-games along Third Avenue. The games were fast-paced.

The event was all about the San Diego FC league

This event was mainly to raise awareness of our new professional soccer team in San Diego. I’m not the biggest soccer fan, but I loved that they made Chula Vista their final tour stop. Having some players promote the team and sign autographs would have been nice, but that was too much to ask.

They had a large merchandise trailer to sell their new T-shirts, hats, and more. Along with the team merch, they also sold T-shirts with the Chula Vista design created by a local artist. That shirt was super cool, and I made sure to get my hands on one.

Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour also had stuff for sale
If you wanted to get your hands on some San Diego FC merchandise then the Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour was the spot. They had a large popup shop with cool stuff.

The Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour went late into the night

After the games wrapped up and the winners were crowned, the event was kicking off. The San Diego FC league had a fashion show showcasing the latest league merchandise. Live music performances by Vilma Diaz & La Sonora and Lil Rob added a festive vibe to the evening, drawing in more spectators and ensuring the festivities carried on long into the night.

A couple of items that could have made it better

While the Chula Vista Chrome Ball Tour was a big hit and well-attended event, some items could have improved it. I don’t think this event will return; it just might be a one-time thing to kick off the new league. First, the layout was tight. They tried to squeeze the games into Third Avenue’s central area, and navigating some of the courts was a hassle.

The live music should have started way earlier. After the final matches of the 3-on-3 games, they did a fashion show, which would’ve been better in the afternoon. Many people left after the lucha libre show because there wasn’t much else to do. They needed to start up the live music to keep people entertained at the event.

I think the event would have been better at one of the larger parks we have here in Chula Vista or even at the Olympic Training Center, where they have the space to hold the games and a large stage. How cool would it have been to have the teams play on the same field as the Olympic athletes? That would’ve been a winner, for sure.

Don’t get me wrong, the event was still a lot of fun, and I had a great time. These are only my two cents to make it better if they return to Chula Vista.

Here are my top three Mexican Restaurants in Chula Vista

Feliz Cinco De Mayo, my top three Mexican Restaurants in Chula Vista, is here. One of the things I love about living here is we have so many great Mexican food restaurants and taco shops. I decided to create my favorites list for Cinco De Mayo. These are just some of my go-to joints, and I highly recommend you try them if you have not already. If you have a favorite, visit my YouTube channel or Instagram and let me know your top three. If I have not already tried them, I will be sure to add it to my list for next time.

#1 El Patio Restaurant: This place has been in Chula Vista since 1954 and is my go-to spot when family or friends visit. The food and service are amazing. It does get a little busy on the weekends, and seating is limited, so please be patient. Their breakfast is also really good.

#2 Garcia’s Mexican Food: I recently discovered this place and even did a few videos about it. It’s one of those local-only spots on Main St., and wow, the food is delicious. It is locally owned and you will even see the family in there working and serving you some fantastic Mexican food.

#3 Don Pedro’s Tacos: When ever I get back from a trip Don Pedro’s is my first stop for some yummy rolled tacos or even the carne asada plate. I live two blocks from it so it’s my number one spot when I want some solid Mexican food.

So those are my top three spots. Let me know what you think, and as always, be sure to follow me on YouTube.

Hurricane Grill & Wings in Otay Ranch

Recently, my wife and I found ourselves wandering through Otay Ranch and decided to explore a new dining spot. We chose Hurricane Grill & Wings, a venue I’ve been eager to check out. The restaurant boasts a spacious interior perfect for large gatherings and a cozy outdoor patio, making it a fantastic spot to enjoy a game with its array of TVs. I’ve also heard rumors of live music on weekends, something I would love to check out.

Our dinner began with garlic fries and a round of refreshing drinks. For her main course, my wife selected the Mexican Street Corn, while I opted for a classic burger, sidestepping the wings this time. Although the onion rings were part of my order, the standout side dish turned out to be the garlic fries. The burger was notably juicy and flavorful, a delightful surprise. I even sampled my wife’s corn and found it equally impressive. The service was warm and welcoming, making our dining experience perfect. Big shout out to Annie for taking care of us.

I would recommend Hurricane Grill & Wings and am already planning a return visit, especially to take advantage of their tempting Tuesday 99 cent wing deal. It’s a spot worth revisiting for anyone looking for a laid-back yet vibrant dining atmosphere.

Be sure to follow us on YouTube! I will be posting more videos like this of the Chula Vista community.
