South Bay Earth Day 2024 had some great music and more for Chula Vista

This past Saturday, Chula Vista hosted its annual South Bay Earth Day event, a spectacular gathering dedicated to environmental stewardship. Despite cloudy skies, the J St. Marina was bustling with energy, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Port of San Diego, the City of Chula Vista, and local sponsors. I was out there for the day and had a great time. I have always felt this event is one so many people don’t realize how good it is.

There were so many activities at this year’s event

The event was a whirlwind of activities, catering to a wide array of interests and ages. Attendees had the chance to engage with several information booths covering everything from composting to solar energy, highlighting the city’s strides toward reducing environmental impact.

A standout addition this year was the repair workshop, a first for the event. Residents lined up to give their household items a second life, aiding the community’s efforts in waste reduction.

The event was equally thrilling for the younger attendees. They participated in a plant-making class, where they could get their hands dirty and take their succulents home. It was a practical, fun lesson on caring for our planet from their homes.

One of the biggest highlights of the event is always the live music. Ozomatli was the headliner. The Selena Tribute Band before them had the crowd dancing to Selena classics.

South Bay Earth Day always has a great musical lineup

The highlight of the day, without a doubt, was the live music. The air was filled with the vibrant beats of Dreaming of You — the Ultimate Selena Tribute Band, and later, the eclectic sounds of Ozomatli. These performances underscored the event’s festive atmosphere, bringing together the community in celebration and dance.

Next year, I will bring a chair and relax and enjoy their live music. Now, all they need is a beer garden so we can enjoy a relaxing day at the bay with excellent live music.

Along with the music, there were plenty of booths to visit and learn how to conserve.

Local Involvement and Learning

The local involvement was impressive, with booths from various city programs, including those on composting and food waste. The City of Chula Vista even provided residents with free food waste buckets to encourage sustainable practices at home.

While the event was a joy, there’s always room for improvement. Expanding the food truck selection would be a delightful improvement. This year, we had just three food trucks, one of which was primarily serving ice cream. The prices seemed steep, with a hamburger and fries costing $30. It would be wonderful to see a wider variety of culinary options in future events, ensuring that there’s something tasty and affordable for everyone to enjoy.

Personal Reflections

Personally, I enjoyed relaxing on the grass, enjoying the live music, and meeting local leaders who shared their vision for Chula Vista’s future. These moments of community connection reinforce the value of local events.

I love to highlight these events to encourage you to get out there and enjoy them. Events like this help you discover all the great city resources available to you. El Cholo’s Kid Bringing Traditional Mexican Artistry to Third Ave

Our vibrant Downtown community recently welcomed an exciting new addition – El Cholo’s Kid, a boutique owned and operated by the passionate Daisy Romero. This trailblazing female entrepreneur has brought the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional Mexican artisans to the streets of Chula Vista.

A Journey Across Borders

Reflecting on her formative years, Daisy shares, “From a young age, I was fortunate to travel extensively throughout Mexico with my parents. These experiences exposed me to the rich tapestry of artisanal traditions that have become woven into the fabric of my life’s passion.” Her love affair with handmade goods blossomed in 2014 when she established her workshops, collaborating with diverse, talented artisans.

However, as her brand transitioned to an online platform, practicality necessitated a pivot. “The beauty and versatility of handcrafted bags captured my heart,” Daisy reminisces. “Not only were they stunning works of art, but their portable nature made them perfectly suited for online sales and shipping. Focusing my efforts on these exquisite, functional pieces was a natural progression.”

El Cholo’s Kid Online Beginnings

Daisy’s venture began humbly in 2008 as an online store, El Cholo’s Kid (named affectionately after her father’s nickname). She initially focused on handmade bags, not only for their beauty but also for the ease of shipping. As the popularity of her wares grew, so did her vision of sharing Mexican cultural traditions with a broader audience.

A Brick-and-Mortar Dream Realized

Last October, Daisy’s long-held dream materialized as she opened her first physical storefront on Third Avenue. The welcoming space showcases an exquisite collection of handcrafted handbags, each a testament to the artistry and ingenuity of skilled Mexican artisans.

If you have walked downtown Chula Vista recently, then you can not miss El Cholo’s Kid storefront. It is very colorful and vibrant; I love it.

We also featured El Cholo’s Kid in our “Five Female Owned” businesses along the third avenue district. Make sure you read more about this remarkable woman.

Sustainable Artistry, Timeless Beauty

What sets El Cholo’s Kid apart is the fusion of traditional techniques with contemporary, sustainable practices. The artisans transform recycled plastics, water bottles, and even plastic bags into intricately woven works of art. Each bag is a unique treasure, reflecting Mexico’s diverse regional styles and symbols.

Forging Lasting Connections in Chula Vista

For Daisy, her business is more than just a commercial endeavor; it’s a way of life. She has nurtured deep relationships with a family of weavers, collaborating closely to bring her unique visions to life. This organic bond ensures that every piece from El Cholo’s Kid is an authentic representation of Mexican cultural heritage.

If you have not added them to your Instagram list, then make sure you give them a follow. @El Cholo’s Kid

A Celebration of Artistry and Sustainability

With El Cholo’s Kid, Daisy has not only brought the vibrant traditions of Mexican artisanship to our doorstep but has also championed the principles of sustainability and cultural preservation. Her boutique is a testament to the power of one woman’s passion and a shining example of how locally-owned businesses can enrich our community’s cultural tapestry.

As Downtown Chula Vista continues to blossom, our community is witnessing an exciting renaissance of local entrepreneurship and cultural expression. Businesses like El Cholo’s Kid are breathing new life into our beloved Third Avenue, transforming it into a vibrant hub where tradition and innovation intertwine. If you haven’t had the chance to stroll along these bustling streets lately, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and flavors that make our neighborhood truly special. Support local, celebrate artistry, and embrace the diverse tapestry of cultures that weave together the fabric of our community. Each visit is an opportunity to discover something unique and forge lasting connections with the passionate entrepreneurs who call Chula Vista home.

Does Otay Farms Market have the best tortillas?

I recently posted a video on Instagram asking where the best flour tortillas are in Chula Vista, and guess what? A savvy follower pointed me toward the hidden gem that is Otay Farms Market & Mexican Food, claiming it reigns supreme in the tortilla game. Intrigued? You bet I was! It’s been ages since my last visit, so I couldn’t resist the urge to explore.

And, oh boy, did Otay Farms deliver! Not only did I snag those much-talked-about flour tortillas, but I also came across a treasure trove of goodies. From fresh produce that looked like it had just been kissed by the morning dew to a meat counter that had me planning BBQs for weeks and a prepared food section that sent my taste buds on a journey. Yes, the tortillas were delish, but my heart still belongs to Carnival Markets when it comes to holding the crown for the best in Chula Vista. However, a plot twist – Otay Farms Market takes the cake (or should I say bread?) for offering the best Mexican bread in town.
